Community Interventions

Here are a few kinds of interventions we use in the community:

Total Environment Home Safety Assessment

  • Here we collect evaluation information and identify in-home hazards associated with health impacts, including those requiring intervention.

  • This involves participant questionnaires and visual inspections for the presence of hazards ranging from basement flooding to lead paint dust, and from indoor asthma triggers to basic home protection against fire or intrusion.

Product Interventions Based on Evidence

  • Once we take in Home Safety Assessment data, we address the needs related to in-home hazards that we find on site.

  • This can look like installing deadbolts and smoke detectors or can go as far as providing Respiratory/Pulmonary Cardiovascular Health package items like HEPA vacuums, HEPA air purifiers, High MERV furnace filters, and green cleaning supplies.

  • We also provide education to residents on how to use these interventions, that they may achieve optimal benefits from proper use.

Rain Garden and Rain Barrel Installation

  • Residents have their homes and yards assessed to determine their unique stormwater reduction needs. Then we provide site-specific recommendations for low-cost, easy-to-implement, green infrastructure.

  • This can look like a rain garden, rain barrel, native herbaceous, or woody tree/shrub installation.

  • These residences will additionally be engaged with conversations, fact sheets, and brochures on woody debris management and healthy home, lawn, and gardening practices.

Energy Efficient Lighting

  • Inefficient lighting contributes to both increased use of fossil fuels and increased utility cost burdens for our residents. We perform household-wide lighting conversions at participating homes to replace bulbs with energy efficient light bulbs.

Air Monitoring and Mold Sampling

  • We use assessment instruments to identify and educate community members about indoor air pollutants such as Lead, PM2.5, Toluene, and other volatile organic compounds.

  • We sample each site, perform mold and mycotoxin analysis, and provide a written report with results and remediation strategies to each household.
